What an ingredient list can—and cannot—tell you
In the United States, cosmetic ingredients are generally listed by their common or usual names and in descending order of predominance, with limited exceptions. That helps you recognize the broad shape of a formula, but it does not reveal exact concentrations, raw-material quality, manufacturing controls, or how the finished product will feel on your skin.
The decoder groups familiar ingredients by the job they commonly perform. It deliberately avoids “clean,” “toxic,” red-light, or green-light ratings. An ingredient’s role, concentration, formula context, and your own history all matter.
Three label details worth noticing
- Fragrance may hide a mixture. A label can use “fragrance” or “parfum” without naming every component. That does not make the product automatically unsafe, but it limits what a label alone can tell someone with a known sensitivity.
- Fatty alcohols are not the same as drying alcohol. Cetyl, cetearyl, and stearyl alcohol are commonly used for texture and conditioning. Alcohol denat., ethanol, and SD alcohol are volatile solvents with a different job.
- More oils do not prove a better formula. A short list can be excellent and a long list can be excellent. Start with the job, the directions, and how your skin responds.
