Coconut oil versus mineral oil for mild-to-moderate xerosis

- Randomized, double-blind, controlled trial with twice-daily application for 2 weeks.
- Participants
- 34 patients with mild-to-moderate xerosis.
- Measured result
- Both oils significantly improved skin hydration and surface lipids, with no significant difference between virgin coconut oil and mineral oil; no adverse reactions were reported.
- Why it is useful
- Supports coconut oil as an emollient option while providing an important boundary: this trial did not show it was superior to mineral oil.
- Transfer limits
- Small, short trial in xerotic legs; it did not test beard hair, healthy facial skin, a multi-ingredient balm, or beard growth.
Controlled human study
Virgin coconut oil versus mineral oil in pediatric atopic dermatitis
- Design
- Randomized, double-blind, active-controlled trial lasting 8 weeks.
- Participants
- 117 pediatric patients were included in the analysis.
- Measured result
- Mean SCORAD decreased 68.23% with virgin coconut oil versus 38.13% with mineral oil (P < .001). Transepidermal water loss and skin capacitance also improved more with coconut oil.
- Why it is useful
- Shows that topical virgin coconut oil can affect validated disease-severity and skin-barrier measures in a controlled human trial.
- Transfer limits
- Children with atopic dermatitis are not healthy adult beard-product users. The result does not establish performance of refined coconut derivatives, a finished balm, or hair growth.
